NASA Curiosity Rover Finds Old Streambed on MARS

mars-curiosity-rover
Mars rover Curiosity has found definitive proof that water once ran across the surface of Mars, US space agency NASA announced. There is earlier evidence for the presence of water on Mars, but this evidence -- images of rocks containing ancient streambed gravels -- is the first of its kind. NASA scientists presented their findings of the former streambed on Mars at a news conference Thursday
Scientists are studying the images of stones cemented into a layer of conglomerate rock, reported Xinhua. The sizes and shapes of stones offer clues to the speed and distance of a long-ago stream's flow. "From the size of gravels it carried, we can interpret the water was moving about three feet per second, with a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep," said Curiosity science co-investigator William Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.
"This is the first time we're actually seeing water-transported gravel on Mars. This is a transition from speculation about the size of streambed material to direct observation of it." The finding site lies between the north rim of Gale Crater and the base of Mount Sharp, a mountain inside the crater. Earlier imaging of the region from Mars orbit allows for additional interpretation of the gravel-bearing conglomerate.
The imagery shows an alluvial fan of material washed down from the rim, streaked by many apparent channels, sitting uphill of the new finds. The next step will be to find a good spot to drill into the rock, NASA says. And they'll be looking for possible carbon deposits, to determine whether the water on Mars once supported life.
Curiosity, loaded with the most-sophisticated instruments ever used to explore another world, touched down on the Red Planet Aug 6. During the next two years, it will use its 10 instruments to investigate whether conditions have been favourable for microbial life and for preserving clues in the rocks about possible past life.

WHY GOOGLE NEED GOOGLE PLUS . Google +(plus) review

WHY GOOGLE NEED GOOGLE PLUS .
Google had to do something. After all it couldn't simply watch as Facebook became the default social home of the connected individual. So it first tried to ride a new (Google) Wave but others just didn't find it surf-worthy. Then it tried to create a new Buzz but managed just a jarring note with exposed contact list of Gmail users.
Suddenly, Google didn't seem the invincible force it once was. Earlier the tech pundits raised a toast to anything and everything Google did or launched; Wave, Buzz and what not. And how silly their predictions turned out!
So when Google unveiled the top-secret Google Plus project, most of us were skeptical, while others were cautious but all were curious. After all there had to be some logic to all those +1 buttons popping all over the web-o-sphere. I mean I just couldn't figure out why would someone plus 1 a page or site or blog when they could just Like it?
Google Plus solves this puzzle.

The Real Reason Behind Google Plus

As the name suggests, Plus is the extension of the searching individual. Come to think of it, Google stands for search and Plus for Social. Google dominates search but is almost completely missing in our social world where Facebook dominates. It is to find out about our likes, dislikes, contacts, interests that Google Plus was born
But why does Google need our social data?
To complement and supplement its advertising business. Right now it has amazing loads of info on people's search habits and preferences and provides its publishers on the Adsense platform accurate search based information to get the most bang for their buck.
But the arrival and dominance of Facebook has altered online advertising forever. Facebook offers features and insights to its ad publishers that Google simply cannot offer, like:
  • Data on users likes, dislikes and interests
  • Pitch ads to users friends which is simply not possible using search advertising
  • Ability to sell products using applications like games (virtual money on Farmville)
  • Ability to stay in constant touch with current and potential buyers through page feeds which is again not possible using search advertising
For these reasons Google needs social data more than ever. The advertising pie is now distributed between more players and advertisers are no longer willing to put all their eggs in the Adsense basket but want to diversify. Facebook ads has also opened another avenue for low cost advertising instead of shelling out $20+ for highly competitive search terms.
No wonder Google craves social info so much that in spite of failed past attempts with Buzz and Orkut it rolled the Plus die. But did have another choice?

3 Best Launchers for Android 4.0+ ICS

With ICS becoming available for more and more smartphones and tablets, apps specifically designed for Android 4.0+ ICS is slowly gaining foothold. Story is no different as far as Android Launchers are concerned. Though a good number of highly regarded Android launchers have not been updated for Android ICS, a number of brand new Launchers are available in Google Play Store which are made for Android 4.0+ ICS from ground-up.
Top Launchers for Android 4.0+ ICS

Stock Android ICS launcher is really good unlike that of previous iterations of Android. So the need for alternatives is really low when compared. Anyway, Apex Launcher is a fast and highly customizable home screen replacement for Android 4.0+ ICS. It surely looks pretty without losing any of the details. Apex Launcher supports multiple drawer styles, drawer apps sorting, tablet specific optimizations, infinite and elastic scrolling, fancy transition effects, homescreen gestures etc. And the whole package in completely free too.
Launchers for Android 4.0+ ICS
Nova Launcher Android ICS

Nova Launcher, along with Apex Launcher, are the two most preferred Launchers for Android 4.0+ ICS. In fact, these are the only two Launchers available in Google Play Store specifically designed for ICS at the moment. Though many consider Apex as the perfect Launcher for ICS, Nova doesn't fall so far behind either in terms of overall usability or crispness. Though free version of Nova Launcher is enough to meet requirements of an average user, there is this paid, slightly more feature rich Nova Launcher Prime version also.
Nova Launcher qrcode
Trebuchet Launcher is the official CM9 Launcher which is still in its early stages of development. It is yet another highly regarded ICS Launcher (though it only works on Android 4.0.1+). Supported features include separate apps/widgets in drawer, show and fade scrolling indicator in homescreen and drawer, enable/disable auto-rotate, transition effects etc. to name a few. Trebuchet Launcher is not available in Google Play Store and hence you have to manually download and install the Trebuchet APK.
Now, if you are not looking for a dedicated Android 4.0 ICS only Launcher, there are quite a number of options available. Here a quick list of top 6 Launchers for Android.

EA Starts Publishing Games in Ubuntu Software Center

EA is one of the most established names in the world of gaming. They have just published two of their browser based games - Lord of Ultima and Command & Conquer Tiberium Alliances - in Ubuntu Software Center. May not be their greatest of games but still, EA took some effort to actually publish some of its games in Ubuntu Software Center. I consider this as a welcome move and hopefully a sign of things to come.

EA Publishes Two of its Browser Based Games in Ubuntu Software Center
EA may not be the kind of company that everyone love. AS a matter of fact, EA was named America's worst company in a recent consumerist survey. But they are definitely big. And their recognition of Ubuntu (and Linux) as a viable platform for playing games can help Ubuntu and Linux community in general, in more ways than one. I know of a number of people who are still using Windows solely for playing games. If more genuine games slowly starts finding its place in Ubuntu Software Center, it is going to be a big win for the entire Linux community.
EA Games for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

As you can also see, both the games are pretty highly rated in Ubuntu Software Center already. And they are both free too. Like most of you, I really want to believe that these are just testing-the-water phase of things and more ingenious and native games from EA are on its way. Let us all hope for a favorable outcome.

All About Spyware

There are a lot of PC users that know little about “Spyware”, “Mal-ware”, “hijackers”, “Dialers” & many more. This will help you avoid pop-ups, spammers and all those baddies.
What is spy-ware?
Spy-ware is Internet jargon for Advertising Supported software (Ad-ware). It is a way for shareware authors to make money from a product, other than by selling it to the users. There are several large media companies that offer them to place banner ads in their products in exchange for a portion of the revenue from banner sales. This way, you don’t have to pay for the software and the developers are still getting paid. If you find the banners annoying, there is usually an option to remove them, by paying the regular licensing fee.
Known spywares
There are thousands out there, new ones are added to the list everyday. But here are a few:
Alexa, Aureate/Radiate, BargainBuddy, ClickTillUWin, Conducent Timesink, Cydoor, Comet Cursor, eZula/KaZaa Toptext, Flashpoint/Flashtrack, Flyswat, Gator, GoHip, Hotbar, ISTbar, Lions Pride Enterprises/Blazing Logic/Trek Blue, Lop (C2Media), Mattel Brodcast, Morpheus, NewDotNet, Realplayer, Songspy, Xupiter, Web3000, WebHancer, Windows Messenger Service.

How to check if a program has spyware?

Can Google Employees Read your Gmail?

gmail logo
All your private and confidential emails are stored in your Gmail mailbox but are they secure? Can a Google employee working on the Gmail product read your messages?
In theory, the answer could be yes. Christopher Nguyen, who was earlier responsible for Google Apps operations at Google, shared this on Quora:
A small number of GMail related engineers have access to the servers as a matter of necessity to do their jobs; a very small number of people actually access the contents as a matter of necessity to do their jobs, and even then, almost always only the associated metadata.
The rest have to file a request and justify any access they ever need, which is extremely rare. All have to sign paperwork re users’ privacy at the risk of dismissal & legal action, knowing that whatever they do is discoverable. And ultimately, an internal culture of respecting users’ privacy helps keep one another in check.
Google also serves contextual text ads in Gmail and these ads are triggered based on the content of the email message that your currently reading. Obviously it is the bots that are scanning your Gmail messages for relevant keywords but Microsoft, with a hope that some Gmail users will shift to Hotmail, is using this point to target Google on privacy.
Some email services, like Gmail, actually read the contents of your mail (both sent and received, even if you aren’t a Gmail user but just sending to someone who is) in order to decide what kind of ads to serve up to you. They may call it “scanning” and attempt to equate it with less invasive activities like “checking for spam” but it’s quite different. For you, and the people you send mail to, it’s not spam, it’s personal.
Microsoft has also released a video, titled the Gmail Man, highlighting this Gmail behavior. Microsoft uploaded the video to YouTube, a platform owned by Google, and it isn’t therefore surprising that the video has garnered more dislikes than likes – after all, most YouTube users are also Gmail users and they aren’t buying Microsoft’s argument.

10 Important Health Tips

border=01 Tea off in the morningHot tea can slash your risk of kidney cancer by 15 per cent, according to a review in the International Journal of Cancer. Try pu-erh tea, which is better than green or black tea at preventing DNA damage.

2 Sleep smarterToo much sleep, or not enough of it, can kill you. A British study found that getting more than nine hours of sack time a night, or less than six, doubles your risk of an early death from any cause. Aim for seven to eight hours a night.

3 Pop in your lenses post-shower
Soaping up while wearing your contacts can expose your eyes to infectioncausing waterborne microbes, say University of Illinois at Chicago researchers.

4 Drink wine, stay leanPolyphenols, the compounds found in red wine, help your body block fat absorption, an Israeli study found. Red-wine marinades work, too.

5 Check your neckAn American Journal of Medicine study found that a mildly underactive thyroid can boost your heart-disease risk by 65 per cent. A quick blood test can assess your level of thyroidstimulating hormone (TSH).

6 Scent your air safelyAvoid air fresheners with phthalates, as it may disrupt hormone processes, the US Natural Resources Defence Council says.

7 Boost your defencesAn Archives of Internal Medicine review reports that 400IU of vitamin D a day cuts your risk of an early death by 7 per cent.

8 Lean backParking your torso at a 90-degree angle strains your spine, say Scottish and Canadian researchers. Instead, give your chair the La-Z-Boy treatment and recline the seat back slightly. The ideal angle is 45 degrees off vertical.

9 Steam your broccoliItalian researchers recently discovered that steaming broccoli raises its concentration of glucosinolates (compounds that fight cancer) by 30 per cent. Boiling lowers the levels.

10 Stretch it out Genes linked to heart disease, diabetes and obesity can be "turned on" if you sit for hours on end, reports a Diabetes study. Hit the "off" button by taking hourly laps during TV, book and web sessions.
